United Nations: Preparations Underway for the Return of Millions of Syrian Refugees Soon

By Sama Marwan,

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, stated that members of the Security Council are discussing an assessment of potential amendments to Resolution 2245 concerning Syria. He noted that the current changes on the ground may necessitate modifying certain provisions of the resolution to align with the present circumstances.

Haq said, “We understand that the key points of the resolution may need updating,” explaining that the situation in Syria requires a comprehensive political transition that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people. He emphasized that achieving this political transition demands broad participation from various parties.

Regarding reconstruction efforts, Haq confirmed that the UN humanitarian coordinator in Syria continues to hold field discussions to determine the essential needs.

He said, “Reconstruction will become a priority to ensure a better future for the country.”

Haq stressed that Syria has suffered significant destruction over the past years, and it is time to focus on developmental efforts to rebuild the country and achieve stability.

The Deputy Spokesperson also stated that UN agencies dealing with migration and refugees foresee the possibility of millions of Syrians returning to their homeland in the coming years.

He confirmed that the organization is preparing for this return by ensuring the availability of all essential needs for the returnees.

Haq highlighted that achieving this goal requires ongoing discussions about reconstruction and economic development in Syria, emphasizing that accommodating such large numbers necessitates sustainable developmental efforts.

On Another Note: Gaza Ceasefire Agreement

Haq also clarified that the United Nations supports the Gaza ceasefire agreement, emphasizing the importance of releasing all detainees and ensuring unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

He stated, “More than two million people in Gaza are suffering from hunger and a lack of essential resources,” calling for the provision of sufficient food, clean drinking water, and necessary healthcare to meet the needs of the population.

Haq stressed that ending the suffering of the people in Gaza requires urgent international action.

The Deputy Spokesperson underlined the importance of fulfilling all commitments to guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He mentioned that the United Nations is pressuring Israeli authorities to facilitate the opening of crossings and accelerate the entry of aid.

He said, “We need international cooperation to achieve this goal; the United Nations cannot work alone.”

Haq pointed out that the current aid is insufficient, saying, “We have been warning about this situation for some time. Many trucks loaded with fuel and food are waiting to enter the sector, but they have not yet arrived.”

Potential Peacekeeping Forces in Gaza

Regarding the future situation if a ceasefire in Gaza is achieved, Haq mentioned the possibility of deploying peacekeeping forces to protect civilians. He explained that this decision depends on the Security Council members.

He concluded by stressing that Gaza will need massive amounts of humanitarian aid and food once the fighting stops. He underscored the urgency of swift action to save residents from the catastrophic conditions they are enduring.

These remarks were made during an interview on the “Midday” program, presented by journalist Hagar Galal, on Al-Qahera Al-Ekhbariya channel.
