The European Commission is reviewing Poland’s decision to support the state-owned company in constructing a new nuclear power plant in Lubiatowo-Kopalino. The Commission launched an investigation after being notified of the decision in September 2024.
According to the “RigZone” oil and gas platform, the plant is expected to become operational in 2030, delivering up to 3,750 megawatts of electricity to the grid. The total investment in the project is estimated at approximately $46.6 billion.
The report highlighted that the plant aims to enhance electricity supply security for Poland and its neighboring countries, assist in decarbonizing the energy sector, and diversify Poland’s energy mix.
Public support planned by Poland for its first nuclear power plant requires assessment by the Commission to ensure compliance with state aid rules designed to maintain competition within the internal market.
In line with competition rules, the Commission will also evaluate the impact on the EU’s internal energy market.
