‘Hospitals have become battlegrounds’: Gaza’s health system on brink of collapse

By Sama Marwan,

Gaza’s healthcare system is on the verge of collapse due to ongoing Israeli military operations, according to a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office. The report highlights a concerning pattern of attacks on medical facilities, with at least 136 strikes on hospitals causing significant damage and casualties among medical personnel.

The UN Human Rights Office has expressed serious concerns about potential violations of international law, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, resulting from these attacks. The report emphasizes that such actions have pushed Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure to the brink of total collapse.

In response, Israeli authorities have defended their actions, alleging that Palestinian armed groups have utilized hospitals for military purposes. However, the UN report describes the evidence provided by Israel as “vague” and calls for independent investigations into the attacks on medical facilities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also raised alarms about the dire situation, urging for the protection of healthcare workers and facilities in Gaza. The WHO reports that the ongoing conflict has severely impeded the delivery of essential health services, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The international community continues to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians, including healthcare providers, to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
