By Sama Marwan,

French media reports have revealed the potential candidates to succeed Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the France national team, who announced his departure from his position after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to L’Équipe, Zinedine Zidane, the former Real Madrid coach and French national team legend, is the top contender to replace Deschamps as France’s head coach in 2026. The newspaper added that Zidane’s winning mentality and his impressive achievements with Real Madrid are key reasons behind his nomination to lead Les Bleus.

Deschamps, who has been at the helm since 2012, confirmed his departure during an interview with TF1, saying that he will step down after the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The French coach stated:

“In 2026, I will leave. It’s very clear in my mind. I have spent my time with France with the same desire and passion to keep the team at the highest level.”

Deschamps took charge of the French national team in 2012, succeeding Laurent Blanc. He led the team through several major tournaments:

  • 2014 World Cup (Brazil) – Reached the quarterfinals
  • 2018 World Cup (Russia) – Won the title
  • 2022 World Cup (Qatar) – Reached the final
  • UEFA Nations League 2021 – Won the trophy
  • EURO 2016 – Reached the final, losing to Portugal

Under Deschamps’ leadership, France became one of the world’s most successful national teams, and his departure will mark the end of a 14-year era.
