Mairie offers grants for electric leaf blowers to reduce noisy gardening in south of France

By Sama Marwan,

In an effort to reduce noise pollution, the commune of Mougins in the Alpes-Maritimes department near Cannes is offering residents subsidies to purchase quieter electric gardening tools. The initiative, effective from January 2025, provides up to 30% off the cost of tools such as hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, and leaf blowers that meet specific low-noise criteria. Residents can receive up to €75 towards the purchase of these tools.

This measure follows previous by-laws introduced in 2022 aimed at limiting noise pollution in the commune. Mougins, with a population of around 20,000, has been proactive in enhancing the quality of life for its residents by addressing environmental concerns. The commune also offers subsidies for electric wood chippers and mulchers.

The move aligns with broader efforts in various regions to mitigate the environmental and health impacts of gas-powered gardening equipment. For instance, the city of Emeryville, California, implemented a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers in July 2024, citing their contribution to noise and air pollution.

Residents interested in taking advantage of the subsidy in Mougins are encouraged to contact the local mairie for detailed information on eligibility criteria and application procedures.

By promoting the use of quieter, electric gardening tools, Mougins aims to create a more peaceful environment and set an example for other communes in the region.
