French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot affirmed that the European Union will not allow other countries to violate its sovereign borders, in response to comments made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding control over Greenland, which has been under Danish rule for over 600 years.
Barrot stated that he does not believe the United States would invade the vast Arctic island but emphasized that the EU will defend its sovereignty.
“There is no doubt that the European Union will not allow any country to attack its sovereign borders, regardless of who they are. We are a strong continent,” Barrot said.
When asked whether he thought the U.S. would seize Greenland, Barrot replied:
“My answer is no. But if the question is whether we’ve entered a time when it’s survival of the fittest, then my answer is yes.”
He stressed that the European Union must not succumb to fear or excessive anxiety but instead wake up and strengthen its power.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of using military or economic means to pursue his publicly stated desire to bring Greenland under U.S. control.
Trump’s remarks, made just two weeks before his inauguration on January 20 in Washington, reflect a clear expansionist agenda.
In addition to his comments about Greenland, Trump suggested that Canada should join the United States, stating:
“If Canada becomes our 51st state, its taxes will drop by more than 60%, and its businesses will double immediately.”
Furthermore, Trump expressed frustration over the Panama Canal, calling for U.S. control of the strategic waterway and complaining about the fees American ships pay to pass through the canal.
