Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed reports about a rise in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in China during a press conference today. He stated that respiratory infections typically peak during the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, with influenza viruses being common pathogens.
According to a statement released by the Chinese Embassy today, Guo emphasized that the overall scope and intensity of respiratory infectious diseases in China are lower this year compared to last year.
Regarding HMPV, he clarified that it is not a new virus and has been circulating among humans for at least 60 years. It is a common virus that causes upper respiratory infections and is generally self-limiting.
Responding to online reports labeling HMPV as an unknown virus, Guo stated that describing this common virus as “unknown” contradicts basic science and promotes unnecessary fear.
He reiterated that the Chinese government prioritizes the health of its citizens and foreign residents in China. The country’s relevant authorities and technical agencies have taken proactive steps to monitor various acute respiratory infections and have published the surveillance results. Chinese disease control experts have also provided guidance on scientific preventive measures to the public on multiple occasions.
Guo added that China maintains close and regular contact with the World Health Organization (WHO) and shares timely information about respiratory diseases.
He concluded by saying, “We will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure that travel within China is safe, comfortable, and convenient for both Chinese nationals and foreigners. It is also essential for everyone to make a joint effort to safeguard their personal and family health.”
