February 15: The 38th African Union Summit to Be Held Under Angola’s Leadership

By Sama Marwan,

The 38th Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) for Heads of State and Government will take place from February 15 to 16 in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Preceding the summit, the 46th session of the AU Executive Council at the ministerial level will be held from February 12 to 15.

In a press release issued today (Saturday), the African Union announced that the summit will mark the handover of the AU’s rotating presidency to Angolan President João Lourenço. This will be the first time Angola assumes this role since joining the African organization.

Angola’s presidency of the AU coincides with a significant milestone: Luanda’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of its independence on November 11, 2025. Angola will take over the presidency from Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who led the AU over the past year.

The AU commended President El Ghazouani for his leadership and efforts in promoting stability and partnerships among member states.

The summit is expected to address critical issues affecting the continent, including:

  • Food security
  • Digital transformation
  • Climate change
  • Strengthening economic integration among member states

This comes amid significant challenges facing African leaders and their populations. Additionally, the summit will outline the AU’s priorities and action plan for the upcoming year.
