Expectations of a Call Between Trump and Putin in the Coming Days: Moscow Stands Firm on Its Positions

By Sama Marwan,

Amid expectations in Moscow that U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days, Russian officials are setting firm stances on the war in Ukraine ahead of any talks, according to The Washington Post. They are also downplaying the likelihood of any imminent breakthrough in U.S.-Russia relations.

Facing increasing battlefield pressure and with a strong possibility that Trump might reduce military aid to Ukraine, many in Moscow believe that Russia could seize more territory and force Kyiv to submit later this year.

Sergey Markov, a Kremlin-aligned analyst, noted that spring would not be an ideal time to end the war. However, by autumn, Trump might reduce funding, and as the Russian military makes further advances, the political conditions could become more favorable for Moscow.

Despite this, Trump has called for a swift resolution to the war and is expected to push for immediate negotiations. In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump proposed imposing high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on any goods sold by Russia to the United States unless Putin agrees to a peace deal with Ukraine.

Trump stated:
“I’ll do Russia and President Putin a huge favor. Settle the matter and end this ridiculous war. It’s only going to get worse.”

Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov posted on Wednesday that Moscow sees only a narrow window of opportunity to forge agreements with the Trump administration. However, according to many influential voices in Russia, such agreements could involve sweeping changes to European security and the disintegration of Ukraine.
