UN Official Stresses the Need for New Ways to Deliver Aid in Gaza

By Sama Marwan,

The UN’s Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, emphasized the necessity of finding new methods to provide assistance in Gaza. She underscored the importance of the entire UN family, along with international and Palestinian NGOs and partners, working tirelessly to achieve this goal. Kaag expressed deep admiration for the relentless efforts of colleagues in Gaza.

According to the UN News Center on Thursday, Kaag voiced hope that the ceasefire would hold, allowing the continued delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid, as well as essential supplies such as shelter, clean water, and other basic necessities. She highlighted the urgent need for people to regain simple, fundamental things like having a roof over their heads, access to clean water, and even the possibility of sleeping in a bed—things they have lost in life.

Kaag, recently appointed as the temporary Special Coordinator for the UN’s Middle East Peace Process, noted during her visit to Khan Younis in Gaza that the region has shown signs of movement and activity since the ceasefire.

She shared her experience of meeting children and mothers at a nutrition center where pregnant women, newborns, and children under five receive essential health screenings. Kaag praised UNICEF’s efforts to piece things together and provide presence wherever possible across Gaza. She also commended the work of a key NGO, TAMO, for reaching out to children, working within communities, and trying to establish a sense of routine for children despite the near-impossible conditions.

During her visit, Kaag held several meetings in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories and continued her engagement with countries in the region.
