“Bibliotheca Alexandrina Director: AI is a Key Driver for Innovation and Development Across Sectors”

By Sama Marwan,

Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Professor of Sociology at Cairo University, explained that artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the primary drivers of innovation and development across various fields today. He emphasized that AI plays a crucial role in providing innovative solutions to the challenges the world is currently facing.

These remarks were made during a seminar organized by the Information and Decision Support Center at the Egyptian Cabinet, held today, in collaboration with Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Trends Research and Advisory Center from the UAE.

The seminar, titled “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Development and Prosperity: Visions and Perspectives for the Future,” brought together experts, specialists, and academics who reviewed different opinions and perspectives regarding the impact of AI on sustainable development. In this context, Dr. Zayed confirmed that AI has become a global goal, particularly given the growing need for innovative solutions to tackle the current economic and social challenges, which require thinking outside the box to overcome them.

Dr. Zayed highlighted that the world today faces several challenges, such as climate change, economic difficulties, and political tensions in many regions, all of which call for the development of new technologies and solutions. He asserted that AI has become a vital tool in this regard, as it can be used to improve risk management in health and education—two of the key goals of sustainable development.

Regarding the benefits of AI, Dr. Zayed stressed the importance of using this technology to offer innovative solutions that enhance quality of life and help build a better world. At the same time, he pointed out that despite the many advantages this technology offers, there are significant challenges related to individual privacy, especially concerning the use of technologies like chatbots, which may negatively affect family relationships and contribute to the spread of harmful ideas that threaten societal stability.

Dr. Zayed concluded his remarks by emphasizing the need to boost investments in AI, noting that this field should be at the forefront of priorities in the upcoming period. He stated that these investments should be used to build a more prosperous world, while ensuring the preservation of national cultural identity. He added that it is time to adopt a proactive approach to address the potential risks that may arise from the unregulated use of these technologies, and to work on minimizing those risks as much as possible.
