The spokesperson for the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that at least 700 people were killed and 2,800 were injured between Sunday and last Thursday during fighting between the army and the M23 rebel group over control of the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a press statement on Saturday, Dujarric explained that the World Health Organization and its partners conducted an assessment between January 26 and 30, reporting 700 deaths and 2,800 injuries, with expectations that these numbers may rise.
The Swiss newspaper 24 Heures quoted Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the head of UN peacekeeping operations, as saying in a press conference that the situation in Goma, located in the north, remains tense and unstable, with sporadic gunfire incidents.
