Ukraine Accepts Rare Metals Deal After Trump’s Pressure… Oil and Gas Included in Agreement

By Sama Marwan,

A rare metals deal, under which Ukraine will transfer some of its mineral resource revenues to the United States, is nearing completion following pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump on Kyiv, according to USA Today.

Trump previously stated that Kyiv must repay the money the U.S. has spent defending Ukraine over the past three years since the start of the Russian invasion. He also mentioned that he had negotiated a rare metals deal with the Ukrainian side but did not disclose details of the final agreement.

Trump confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to visit Washington this Friday to sign the rare metals agreement.

While Ukraine has agreed to the deal between Trump and Zelensky, its details remain undisclosed. However, The Washington Post reported that the U.S. and Ukraine have reached an agreement granting America partial access to metals, oil, and gas from Ukrainian territories.

The report indicated that Zelensky rejected Trump’s proposal for the U.S. to receive $500 billion worth of minerals—an amount significantly exceeding the total military and financial aid the U.S. has provided to Ukraine since the war began. Additionally, the proposal did not include security guarantees for continued U.S. military protection of Ukraine after the war, and it remains unclear whether the new agreement will address this issue.

On the other hand, Trump told reporters that providing security guarantees to Ukraine after the war remains under discussion. For the first time, he suggested that “some form of peacekeeping forces” would be part of any agreement to end the war. However, Russia responded by rejecting the idea, calling it “unacceptable.”
