Australian authorities have issued evacuation orders for thousands of residents whose homes are at risk of flooding, in preparation for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone “Alfred” on Australia’s east coast on Saturday morning.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), heavy rainfall and strong winds caused power outages for tens of thousands of homes on Friday morning as Cyclone “Alfred” approaches landfall in southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales.
In Queensland, more than 46,000 properties experienced power outages in several areas of the state, while over 35,000 homes and facilities in northern New South Wales also lost power due to severe winds and heavy rainfall.
Weather conditions are expected to worsen by Friday evening and throughout Saturday, with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology warning that rainfall levels could reach up to 800 millimeters as the cyclone passes.
