South Korea’s Ruling Party Welcomes Decision to Release President Yoon

By Sama Marwan,

South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) welcomed the prosecution’s decision on Saturday to release President Yoon Suk-yeol after the Seoul Central District Court ruled in his favor, calling the decision “logical.”

Party spokesperson Shin Dong-wook stated in a press release—reported by KBS in its English-language broadcast—that the party welcomes the reasonable decision to release President Yoon Suk-yeol, despite the prosecution’s delay in accepting the court’s ruling.

Earlier today, South Korean authorities released President Yoon after 52 days of detention following his attempt to impose martial law in the country last December.

It is worth noting that since December 3, South Korea has experienced political turmoil after Yoon declared a state of emergency in a televised address to the nation. He argued that martial law was necessary to protect the constitutional order and eliminate pro-North Korean forces in the country. However, he lifted the measure shortly afterward following its rejection by the National Assembly (parliament).

On December 14, South Korea’s National Assembly voted in favor of impeaching President Yoon for his declaration of martial law.
