Spanish Ambassador to Cairo: We Support the Egyptian Plan for Gaza Reconstruction

By Manal El Warraky

The Spanish Ambassador to Cairo, Alvaro Iranzo, said that his country supports the development of strong ties between the European Union and Egypt, praising the comprehensive strategic partnership signed last year, describing it as a unique instrument whose potential is revealed daily.

He pointed out that cooperation between the two countries represents a strategic partnership, a unique type of relationship that provides Spain and Egypt with a political framework that lives up to our shared understanding in many areas, most notably trade and investment.

Gaza Reconstruction

In a statement issued by the Spanish Embassy in Cairo, Iranzo added that, in line with the European Union, Spain expressed its satisfaction with the adoption of the Egyptian plan for Gaza reconstruction, and that we support Egyptian mediation efforts to create the necessary conditions on the ground for reconstruction.

He continued, “The situation has worsened with the collapse of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Israeli military activities have exacerbated the already horrific number of casualties in the Strip.” He emphasized that the Spanish government has strongly called for an immediate ceasefire, as it is the best way to prevent further casualties, as well as for the release of detainees, the provision of more humanitarian support, and the commencement of the reconstruction process without displacing the local population.

The Necessity of a Two-State Solution

The ambassador continued, “We have firmly called for compliance with international humanitarian law in Gaza and reminded of the importance of linking efforts in Gaza to the political implementation of a two-state solution, the only formula that can achieve lasting peace.”
