Matthew Lillard is currently in negotiations to join the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming TV adaptation of Carrie, based on Stephen King’s legendary debut novel.
The series will mark a reunion between Lillard and director Mike Flanagan (The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass), with whom he recently collaborated on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck. That project earned the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and is scheduled to be released by Neon on June 6.
Lillard would join previously announced cast members Summer H. Howell, who stars as the titular Carrie White, and Siena Agudong, who plays Sue Snell.
Created by writer, executive producer, and showrunner Mike Flanagan—who will also direct select episodes—the series offers a reimagined take on the classic story of Carrie White, a timid teenager tormented at school and home. As she struggles with relentless bullying and her oppressive, religious mother, Carrie discovers she possesses telekinetic powers.
This new adaptation follows four previous film versions of Carrie, the most iconic being Brian De Palma’s 1976 classic starring Sissy Spacek. The series will span eight episodes and has moved swiftly into development since Flanagan opened the writers’ room in late fall. The project received its official greenlight in April.
Trevor Macy is also on board as an executive producer, with production handled by Amazon MGM Studios.
In addition to this potential role, Lillard recently began work on Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. His upcoming film projects include Scream 7, where he returns to the iconic horror franchise, and the Blumhouse/Universal sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on the popular video game.
