The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival 2025 will launch its Cannes Classics section with the restored version of “The Gold Rush”, a masterpiece by the legendary Charlie Chaplin, one of the most iconic figures of silent comedy cinema.
This special screening comes in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the film’s original premiere in 1925 in Los Angeles, and follows a meticulous 4K restoration that revives its original brilliance and visual clarity—offering a rare artistic experience for classic film lovers.
“The Gold Rush” is considered one of Chaplin’s greatest works, featuring his iconic character “The Tramp”, which became a lasting symbol of silent cinema and a cornerstone of cinematic history.
Screening this film at Cannes is a golden opportunity for today’s audience to rediscover its artistic depth with unprecedented clarity and precision.
The restoration was carried out by the Italian institution La Cineteca di Bologna, renowned for its decades-long dedication to preserving Chaplin’s cinematic legacy and presenting it to new generations in a quality worthy of its place in art history.
This year’s Cannes Classics lineup also includes the restored version of Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon”, alongside works by prominent filmmakers such as Edward Yang and John Woo, in a rich selection that reflects the diversity and depth of global cinema heritage.
“The Gold Rush” is set to be released in cinemas worldwide on June 26, 2025, marking the centennial of its original screening—serving as a bridge between the past and the present, and offering viewers an exceptional chance to experience one of the golden screen’s true icons in a renewed and radiant form.
