U.S. President Donald Trump hinted on Sunday at the possibility of an imminent breakthrough in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
In a post on his Truth Social platform — as reported by ABC News — Trump wrote:
“A potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine. Just think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved when this ongoing bloodbath is stopped. It will be a new and better world.”
Trump added that he would continue working with both parties to help make this a reality, emphasizing that the U.S. wants to focus on reconstruction and trade instead of war. He concluded with:
“A busy week ahead.”
His remarks come after Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier today called on Kyiv to resume direct negotiations to end the crisis in Ukraine without preconditions, suggesting that talks could be held next Thursday in Istanbul.
Putin had also declared a unilateral three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10, coinciding with Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations marking the end of World War II.
