On Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 10:06 PM local time, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 struck the Central Tokachi region of Hokkaido, Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the quake’s epicenter was located at latitude 42.8°N and longitude 143.4°E, at a depth of 90 kilometers.
The maximum seismic intensity recorded was 4 on Japan’s 7-point scale, observed in Urahoro Town. Other areas, including Kushiro City, Obihiro City, and several towns in Hokkaido, experienced intensities ranging from 1 to 3.
Despite the moderate strength of the earthquake, no tsunami warning was issued, and there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage. The JMA confirmed that the earthquake poses no tsunami risk.
Hokkaido, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is accustomed to seismic activity. The region’s infrastructure and emergency services are well-prepared for such events, contributing to the minimal impact observed in this instance.
