Trump: Ceasefire Agreement Between India and Pakistan Prevented a Nuclear War

By Sama Marwan,

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was a significant effort that prevented the outbreak of a nuclear war.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said:

“I believe that would have sparked a nuclear war, or something similar… and now everyone is satisfied. In fact, I asked my administration to contact them so we could begin negotiations immediately.”

Following several days of military clashes between the two nuclear powers—India and Pakistan—after a deadly attack on Hindu tourists in the disputed Kashmir region last month, which Islamabad denied involvement in, the two sides exchanged gunfire and missile attacks, including drone strikes, across the border. The escalation alarmed world powers, who worked until an announcement was made of a full and immediate ceasefire agreement.

President Trump announced on May 10 that India and Pakistan had reached an agreement to halt hostilities. He wrote on social media:

“After a long night of U.S.-brokered talks, I’m pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire.”
He added:
“I congratulate both countries for their wisdom and great intelligence.”
