Washington D.C., USA – The U.S. Senate has approved the appointment of Charles Kushner, the father of Jared Kushner (President Donald Trump’s son-in-law), as the U.S. Ambassador to France.1 This move comes after the Republican president granted his relative a presidential pardon for a criminal conviction during his first term in office.
The Senate confirmed the new ambassador’s appointment by a vote of 51 to 45.
Charles Kushner, a real estate magnate, served one year in federal prison after being sentenced in 2004 to two years on tax evasion charges. He was pardoned by Trump at the end of his first presidential term.
Kushner arrives in Paris at a time when relations between the United States and France, historically allies, and Europe in general, are strained due to the American president’s threats of a trade war.
