In a significant development that sent ripples through Egyptian and African football, Tunisian superstar left-back Ali Maâloul has officially announced his departure from Egyptian giants Al Ahly this summer. The news marks the end of a remarkable nine-year tenure that saw Maâloul etch his name into the club’s history books as one of its most decorated and beloved foreign players.
Maâloul, who joined Al Ahly in the summer of 2016, became an indispensable figure, consistently delivering stellar performances and contributing significantly to the Red Devils’ unprecedented success. His time with the club was adorned with an astounding 21 titles, including a remarkable four CAF Champions League crowns and six Egyptian Premier League championships. With 51 goals and 85 assists in 292 appearances, he leaves as Al Ahly’s highest-scoring and most-appearing foreign player.
The decision to part ways comes after Al Ahly officially informed Maâloul that his journey with the club had reached its conclusion. This move follows a period where the Tunisian international had been recovering from a partial tendon tear that required surgery in May 2024. Despite his recovery and return to training, he had only featured twice since January, as the club’s coach reportedly opted for a new direction for the squad, including plans to sign a foreign attacker.
In an emotional farewell message, Maâloul expressed his profound love and loyalty for Al Ahly and its passionate fanbase, highlighting the deep bond he forged with the club throughout his illustrious career. His departure signifies the closing of a golden chapter for both the player and the institution he served with such dedication. While his next destination remains to be officially announced, reports suggest he is considering offers from various clubs, including a potential return to the Tunisian league.
