Indian Ambassador in Cairo: Egypt and India Must Cooperate to End the Suffering in Gaza

By Manal El Warraky

India’s Ambassador to Egypt, Mr. Suresh K. Reddy, emphasized that the escalating situation in Gaza and the ongoing violations against civilians require a decisive response from the international community. He stressed the importance of closer cooperation between Egypt and India to find just and lasting solutions to regional conflicts, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.

His remarks came during a meeting between a high-level Indian parliamentary delegation and a group of Egyptian politicians, opinion leaders, and media figures. Ambassador Reddy noted that the longstanding relations between Egypt and India have witnessed steady growth, especially during the Cold War era when both nations adopted shared stances within the Non-Aligned Movement.

He added that this shared historical legacy should be revived and developed to confront today’s regional and global challenges, highlighting that the two countries’ partnership is built on strong foundations of mutual understanding and support for the rights of peoples—particularly in matters of justice, human rights, and international law.

The ambassador also underlined the significance of high-level reciprocal visits, such as President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cairo, which translated bilateral cooperation into concrete and practical steps.

Ambassador Reddy stressed the importance of solidarity in the face of humanitarian crises, affirming that Egypt and India share a common vision regarding the need to respect peoples’ right to self-determination, especially amid the grave and ongoing violations in Gaza.

He also highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between the two civilizations, dating back to the 3rd century BCE during the reign of Emperor Ashoka—an enduring legacy that reflects centuries of cultural and diplomatic exchange.

In conclusion, Reddy affirmed that the countries’ alignment on issues of justice and their shared rejection of hegemony and armed conflict form a solid foundation for enhanced cooperation to foster peace and stability in the region.

It is worth noting that the Indian parliamentary delegation met with prominent Egyptian political figures and members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and also held talks with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty.
