Former Iranian nuclear negotiator Seyed Hossein Mousavian confirmed that his country had no plans to produce a nuclear bomb, but the Israeli military attack is likely to push its leaders toward developing one.
In a statement to CNN aired on Friday, Mousavian said:
“Iran has always maintained transparency regarding its nuclear program and has been open to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), but the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement and recent Israeli attacks are pushing Iran to feel it needs nuclear deterrence. If this situation continues, Iran may seek to obtain a nuclear bomb.”
Mousavian added:
“Waging war on Iran will not lead it to abandon its nuclear program… so it is better to return to diplomacy rather than war.”
