Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, presented a detailed report to the UN Security Council outlining the losses and repercussions stemming from the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. She emphasized that “we are on the brink of a full-scale war and a humanitarian crisis.”
According to the United Nations News Center, DiCarlo warned of the economic consequences of the conflict, stating:
“We cannot rule out the global impact of a potential disruption to trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which the World Bank has described as the most important oil transit chokepoint in the world.”
She also highlighted the current, real-time effects of the conflict, saying:
“With every passing day of fighting, the danger grows—especially for civilians.”
DiCarlo expressed serious concern over Israel’s attacks on nuclear facilities, as well as the risk of the conflict escalating further.
However, she stressed that the window to prevent a catastrophic escalation and achieve a peaceful resolution remains open, pointing to recent diplomatic developments as signs of promising opportunities for de-escalation.
