By Sama Marwan,

U.S. Air Force General Alexus G. Grynkewich has officially taken over as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) in a formal military ceremony held today, Friday, at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. He succeeds U.S. Army General Chris Cavoli, who had held the post since 2022.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised General Cavoli during the ceremony, commending his role in modernizing NATO’s collective defense and enhancing its response to Russia’s ongoing full-scale war against Ukraine.

Rutte also thanked Cavoli for strengthening NATO’s military presence in the Baltic Sea region to protect critical undersea infrastructure and for his role in establishing NATO’s new command in Germany, which contributes to military and security support for Ukraine.

Addressing General Cavoli, Rutte said: “You have been an outstanding Supreme Allied Commander Europe, leading your duties with honor and integrity.”

The Secretary General also welcomed General Grynkewich, noting that he possesses extensive experience qualifying him to lead NATO’s military operations amid current global challenges.

Rutte explained that, as a former fighter pilot, Grynkewich has a deep understanding of aerial and other threats, highlighting his recent role as Director for Operations on the U.S. Joint Staff, where he played a significant part in executing security and defense priorities. Rutte added: “NATO can count on you to serve the Alliance with the same steadfast determination shown by your predecessors.”

The Allied Command Operations is NATO’s executive arm, responsible for planning and executing all of the Alliance’s military operations.

General Grynkewich becomes the twenty-first Supreme Allied Commander Europe, a historic position first held by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who later became the 34th President of the United States.
