U.S. President Donald Trump said he wants to provide assistance to Ukraine in the field of air defense, given the intensification of Russian attacks.
During a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held last night, Trump expressed his willingness to help Kyiv strengthen its air defense capabilities and said he would look into the aid that has been suspended, according to a Ukrainian official and another source familiar with the call, speaking to the American website Axios today.
One of the sources said Trump is aware of the recent Russian escalation, including air strikes on Ukrainian cities and frontline positions.
The Ukrainian official confirmed that Trump and Zelensky agreed that American and Ukrainian teams would meet soon to discuss air defense and other arms supplies.
It is worth noting that the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced last Wednesday the suspension of a shipment of weapons to the Ukrainian army, including interceptor aircraft and ammunition.
Axios reported that Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday regarding the war in Ukraine but later confirmed that no progress had been made in this regard, as Putin told the American president that Russia would not abandon its objectives in Ukraine.
Following the call between the Russian and American presidents, Russia escalated its air raids on Ukraine, launching hundreds of drones and dozens of ballistic missiles. Trump subsequently said he was deeply disappointed with the conversation he had with Putin.
