Russian Ambassador to Cairo: Using national currencies instead of the dollar and the euro is in the interest of both countries

By Manal Abdel Fattah

Russia’s ambassador to Egypt, Georgy Borisenko, stressed that strengthening interaction with major international partners, including Egypt, is one of Russia’s priorities in the Eurasian Economic Union, and by establishing a free trade zone between Egypt and this union, Egypt will gain freedom of access to the market not only in our country. But also in four other countries.

He explained that it would also be in the mutual interest to shift trade to using national currencies and other alternative currencies, instead of the dollar and the euro, which are no longer a reliable means of payment due to their use by their exporters for selfish political purposes.

This came during the round table entitled “Egypt and the Eurasian Economic Union… Prospects for Cooperation,” organized by the Russian Embassy in Cairo and the Al-Hiwar Center for Strategic and Media Studies within the framework of the Russian presidency in this union in 2023, at the Egyptian Public Library.

The event was attended by prominent Egyptian economists, political scientists, journalists, diplomats and businessmen.
