Adel bin Abdul Rahman Al-Asoumi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, and his accompanying delegation met with Sheikha Hasina Wajid, Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, to congratulate her on her victory in a fifth term following the announcement of the results of the general elections that the country witnessed on January 7, 2024.
During the meeting, Al-Asomi praised the honorable position of the Republic of Bangladesh towards the Palestinian issue and its support for the Palestinian people in the face of the brutal aggression and genocidal crimes launched by the occupying power in the Gaza Strip over the course of more than three continuous months, and added that the Arab Parliament and the entire Arab people appreciate that The Republic of Bangladesh was among the five countries that submitted a request to the International Criminal Court in The Hague to conduct an urgent investigation into the violations and genocidal crimes committed by the occupation forces against the Palestinian people.
He also praised the calls to boycott the products and goods of companies and parties supporting the occupying power inside the Republic of Bangladesh, which come in the context of supporting the Palestinian people.
This meeting came within the framework of the visit made by the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, leading a parliamentary delegation to the Republic of Bangladesh, to participate as an international observer in the general elections that the country witnessed, in response to the invitation he received from the committee responsible for organizing the elections.
During the discussions, Al-Asomi stressed the Arab Parliament’s keenness to strengthen the ties of Arab relations with the Republic of Bangladesh, based on the importance it represents within the Asian continent, as well as the depth of Arab-Bangladeshi relations at various economic, political and cultural levels, and the Arab Parliament’s aspiration to strengthen these relations at the parliamentary level. To strengthen popular relations between the two sides.
For her part, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid praised the role played by the Arab Parliament, in defense of issues that concern the Arab and Islamic worlds, most notably the Palestinian issue, stressing that Bangladesh, based on its Islamic identity, will be keen to play a greater role in stopping the Israeli aggression and defending The rights of the Palestinian people to live in a free and stable state with the city of Jerusalem as its capital, noting also its desire to strengthen its country’s relations with the Arab Parliament on issues of common concern.
