Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Committee announced that the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the jailed Iranian women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi. According to Reuters, the committee that awarded the prize stated: “The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi in recognition for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.” In addition that Narges Mohammadi is one of the most well known Iranian human rights activists who supports women’s rights and also calls for the repeal of death penalty. Mohammadi is currently serving multiple jail terms totaling about 12 years in Tehran’s Evin Prison, according to the human rights organization Front Line Defenders (FLD). This is one of the many periods she has been detained behind bars, and the charges include spreading propaganda against the nation.
