Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated on behalf of Ahmedabu Al-Gheit, Secretary-General, in the work of the extraordinary summit (42) of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), which was held on Thursday, 1/18/2024, in Entebbe, Uganda, headed by President Ismail Omar Guelle, President of the Republic of Djibouti, President Current session to find.
In statements after the end of the summit, Ambassador Hossam Zaki said that he presented to the summit the League’s vision on the two topics that were discussed, namely the crisis between the Republic of Somalia and Ethiopia following the latter’s signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Somaliland region, and the second is supporting peace in Sudan.
During his speech, Ambassador Hossam Zaki stressed the Arab position on the “Memorandum of Understanding for Partnership and Cooperation” signed between Ethiopia and the Somaliland region in accordance with the decision issued by the League Council at the ministerial level on January 17, which declared full solidarity with the Somali state and supported its position by considering this memorandum invalid. It is invalid and unacceptable, and any legal, political, commercial or military implications resulting from it are rejected.
In this context, Ambassador Hossam Zaki stressed that the Arab League considers the “Somaliland” region an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia and that any arrangements related to this region should result primarily from political dialogue among the single Somali people.
Regarding the situation in Sudan, the Assistant Secretary-General stressed the need to stop armed clashes in order to prevent bloodshed, to preserve the security and safety of the Sudanese people, their gains, territorial integrity and sovereignty, to preserve Sudanese national institutions, to reject any external interference in internal Sudanese affairs, and to stress the importance of supporting international and regional coordination that aims to achieve Stop bloodshed and restore peace and stability in the country, and the necessity of involving the Sudanese state in any regional or international initiatives that achieve this goal.
