According to AP news, European Union considers launching a naval mission in Red Sea within three weeks to offer protection to cargo ships against Houthi rebels’ attacks from Yemen that are undermining trade and escalating costs.
EU foreign policy chief Josep. Borrell stated that he wants the mission to be fully operational by Feb. 17th. They state that seven EU countries have already declared their readiness to provide them with vessels or aircraft. Several other countries like Belgium have already promised to send a frigate. Germany is projected to conduct the same.
US and British forces conducted a synchronized retaliatory strike against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels’ missile-launching capabilities in eight strongholds last week.
The Houthis have undertaken a constant campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October, but Borrell emphasized that the EU mission will not participate in any military actions.
“The goal is to defend the ships. Interception of attacks against ships. Not participating in any activities against the Houthis. Only preventing the Houthis’ strikes,” Borrell informed reporters before chairing a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels.
Ministers are set to decide on the lead country for the naval effort and headquarters location, amid growing demand from businesses due to trade implications.
European firms seek alternative routes to South Africa due to high cost increases and inflation, aiming to avoid risk and improve their business model.
