Ambassador Gui Tirreno, Portugal’s ambassador to Cairo, stressed the strength, durability and depth of the relations between his country and Egypt in all political, economic and cultural fields, in addition to the close coordination between Cairo and Lisbon regarding regional and international issues of common concern.
The ambassador described the relations between the two countries as “distinguished and historic” and have witnessed great development in recent years, which is reflected in the pace of mutual visits at all levels and high-level meetings between officials of the two countries.
Tirreno also referred to the ongoing meetings and communications between Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Portuguese counterpart João Cravinho, which focus not only on cooperation between the two countries, but also on regional and international developments, most notably the ongoing conflict in Gaza and international efforts to stop the war and the humanitarian situation in the Strip.
Regarding Portugal’s vision of ways to end the crisis in Gaza, he said that his country stresses the necessity of stopping this conflict immediately and putting an end to the suffering and killing of the population in the Strip, and then working to implement the two-state solution.
Regarding economic cooperation between the two countries, the ambassador said that the relations between Egypt and Portugal on the economic level are good, but the two sides must work to strengthen and strengthen them, especially since they have great potential, pointing to the importance of organizing visits to both sides in order to enhance investment opportunities and trade exchange.
Regarding cultural relations between Egypt and Portugal, he said that the two countries have historical relations, noting the importance of working to consolidate cooperation in the cultural field.
The ambassador reviewed the cooperation between his country and Egypt in the field of education, especially with the presence of a department for studying the Portuguese language at Ain Shams University.
