The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Cairo held a friendly football match on the school grounds of the Russian Embassy in Egypt, to celebrate Russian Diplomacy Day.

According to a statement issued by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Cairo, the football teams included each of the diplomatic missions of the BRICS member states, with the participation of Argentine diplomats.

The match ended with the representatives of Brazil winning in a fair and tense battle after a series of matches, while the Russians won second place, while the Indian team received bronze awards.

After the match ended, the participants continued the friendly celebration in an informal manner.

BRICS is an economic group that includes Russia, Brazil, China, India, and South Africa. Negotiations to form it began in 2006, and held its first summit in 2009.

Initially, the group included Brazil, Russia, India, and China under the name “BRIC,” then South Africa joined it in 2011 to become “BRICS.”

In 2023, the leaders of the BRICS group announced that, starting this year, six new countries will join the club of major emerging economies that include the largest population blocs and seek to reshape the global order.

The BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, agreed at their annual summit in Johannesburg to grant Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates full membership as of January 1, 2024.
