US President Joe Biden spoke with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, where the two leaders discussed the war in Gaza and their efforts to secure the release of hostages held by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.
According to a statement issued by the United States Embassy in Cairo, President Biden thanked President Sisi for Egypt’s leadership in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The two presidents stressed that the release of the hostages would lead to an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza for at least six weeks, and they exchanged views on how to transform this long period of calm into something more durable.
They also discussed planning to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza and how a ceasefire under the hostage deal will further help enable those efforts and ensure aid reaches civilians in need throughout Gaza.
They also discussed the tragic and disturbing incident that occurred at the Nabulsi Roundabout, earlier yesterday, in northern Gaza. The two leaders expressed their sadness at the loss of civilian lives, and agreed that this incident underscores the urgent need to end negotiations as soon as possible and expand the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The two leaders and their teams agreed to remain in regular contact in the coming days.
