China’s top political advisory body opens its annual session

The 14th National People’s Congress, China’s highest legislative body, opened its second session this morning in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, and other Chinese leaders attended the opening session, while Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council, presented the government’s work report during the session.

The legislators reviewed a report from the State Council on the implementation of the 2023 national economic and social development plan, the 2024 draft plan as well as the 2024 draft national economic and social development plan.

They also reviewed a report from the State Council on the implementation of the central and local budgets for the year 2023 and on the draft central and local budgets for the year 2024 as well as the draft central and local budgets for the year 2024.

Li Hongzhong, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, explained the draft revision of the Basic Law of the State Council during the opening session of the second session of the 14th National People’s Congress.
