The activities of the fourth edition of the Cultural Diplomacy series, organized by Al-Bayt magazine, concluded from inside the residence of the Finnish Ambassador to Egypt, Pekka Kosonen, under the title “Alvar Aalto and the Human Dimension,” where he displayed for the first time a large and unique collection of designs by the famous Finnish architect and designer, “Alvar Aalto.” He is known as the father of contemporary art in Scandinavian societies, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of his trip to Egypt during the 1950s.

This came in the presence of the keynote speaker and co-coordinator of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, Timo Rico, and the vision and cooperation coordinator, Ms. Soraya Bahgat, a women’s rights activist in Egypt.

A number of ambassadors of foreign countries in Egypt, including Austria, Sweden, Norway, Colombia, Switzerland, Denmark, Singapore, New Zealand, Slovenia, and a number of public figures in various fields of creativity, participated in the celebration, which was held at the headquarters of the Finnish Ambassador in Cairo.

In the first event of the fourth edition, the British University was visited, and during the visit a special shield of honor was presented by the university to journalist Sawsan Murad, the Finnish ambassador to Egypt, and Mr. Timo Rikko.

A design and arts exhibition was organized by the famous Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, with coordination and artistic direction by engineer Mohamed Hamada.

The exhibition included rare designs by Aalto for furniture and accessories, and three documentary films and a group of photographs of his trip to Egypt in 1954/1955 were also shown for the first time.

The Finnish ambassador to Egypt, Pekka Kosonen, stated that Finnish design is not famous enough in Egypt, so when we decided to hold that exhibition, we chose to have it coincide with the visit of the architect and designer Alvar Aalto to Cairo 70 years ago in the 1950s, and we thought of restoring his designs from new.

Sawsan Murad, editor-in-chief of Al-Bayt magazine, also said that Al-Far Alto is an icon in the world of modern architecture and one of the people who laid the beginnings of modern architecture and also set a mark in the world of design. That night, Cairo is experiencing one of the exceptional nights of design.
