The Kingdom of Morocco, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2756, which extends the mandate of the MINURSO mission until October 31, 2025.
The ministry explained, in a statement, that this decision comes in a context marked by the irreversible path drawn by King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, on the issue of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, through the increasing support of the permanent members of the Security Council and influential countries for the Moroccan Sahara and the autonomy initiative presented by Rabat in 2007.
The same source added that the resolution, adopted by the Security Council, preserves all the gains achieved by Morocco, and also includes important new elements for the future development of the issue within the United Nations.
The text of the new UN resolution enshrines the framework and parties to the artificial conflict and the purpose of the political process in the Sahara issue, and reiterates that the round tables constitute the only and sole framework for reaching a political solution to the regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
The Security Council reiterated in its resolution that the political solution can only be realistic, pragmatic, lasting and based on consensus, which are the essential elements of the Moroccan initiative for autonomy, the supremacy of which was reaffirmed in the same UN resolution.
The Security Council noted “the recent momentum experienced by the Sahara issue and strongly called for building on it”, which confirms, according to a statement from the Moroccan Foreign Ministry, the adoption by the UN Council of the international dynamic witnessed by this file, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who is leading this conflict from the management stage to the resolution, based on the Moroccan initiative for autonomy.
In a related context, the Security Council called on the other parties to this conflict to “avoid actions that could undermine the political process”, which, according to the Moroccan Foreign Ministry’s statement, shows that the Council thus reflects the clear official position of the Kingdom, which confirms that there is no political process without respecting the ceasefire. It is worth noting that the aforementioned Security Council resolution was approved by 12 votes, with 2 abstentions, namely Russia and Mozambique, while Algeria refused to participate in the vote on it.
