In a crucial move to prevent a government shutdown, House Republicans, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, are working to broker a deal with Senate Democrats. However, this negotiation is complicated by the polarized nature of the current Congress and the looming presidential transition. While President-elect Donald Trump is expected to exert considerable influence, his team’s priorities, including a shift toward more stringent border policies and defense budget increases, have already begun to spark debate within the party.
Additionally, Trump’s recent appointment of several high-profile figures, including Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, has triggered concerns about the militarization of U.S. politics. Hegseth, a staunch conservative media personality, is seen by many as a polarizing figure who could face intense scrutiny during Senate confirmation hearings. His strong rhetoric on transforming the military into a more Christian-led institution is drawing sharp reactions from both political sides.
At the same time, efforts to address the economic fallout from the ongoing geopolitical tensions with China are gaining steam.
