UN Discusses Relief Efforts for Syria

By Sama Marwan,

The UN continues to address Syria’s deteriorating situation, with several member states and organizations urging coordinated action to improve humanitarian efforts and resolve the ongoing crisis. At the recent UN Security Council meetings, there were multiple calls for a political solution in line with Resolution 2254 (2015), and for humanitarian access to remain unimpeded. As the war drags on, Syria’s humanitarian conditions worsen, with 90% of the population living in poverty and significant numbers of people displaced across the region. The UN’s cross-border aid operations are critical for providing food, water, and healthcare in areas of Syria like Idlib and Aleppo, where conflict remains intense.

Several countries, including France and Japan, have emphasized the importance of lifting sanctions only when there are tangible signs of political progress. In contrast, Russia and China have called for respect of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. There’s also a growing concern about the impact of international sanctions on humanitarian aid delivery, as reported by the United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia. Some nations, including the EU, continue to support Syrian refugees and the neighboring countries hosting them.

Recent developments show the UN’s role in facilitating aid through key border crossings such as Bab al-Hawa. However, there are fears that the worsening violence could disrupt these essential routes and escalate the already dire humanitarian crisis
